Individuals with severe gum disease are nearly 25% more likely to develop at least some type of cancer, compared to people who have no gum disease or only mild periodontitis. Other studies suggest that the rate is as high as 43-52%, depending on the type of cancer.

Types of Cancers Linked to Periodontal Disease

A higher severity of gum disease is closely associated with cancers like:

•   Breast
•   Colon and colorectal cancer
•   Esophageal
•   Lung
•   Oral
•   Pancreatic
•   Prostate
•   Stomach

Lung cancer shows the highest correlation with gum disease, followed by colorectal cancer. Part of the reason for lung cancer being so high may be due to the link between aggressive periodontal infections and smoking, which is also a risk factor.

Specific enzymes associated with gum disease are also known to activate other types of enzymes, specifically those that are responsible for stimulating cancerous cells in otherwise healthy tissue.

Can Gum Treatment Help Cancer Patients?

Experts including oncologists recommend that people with active oral diseases take a special interest in their periodontal health. By modifying their lifestyle habits — from improved flossing to tobacco cessation plans — it’s possible to eliminate cancer risk factors and potentially lower one’s chances of developing a debilitating disease.

When to See a Specialist

If you were recently diagnosed with cancer, your oncologist may recommend seeing a dentist before beginning your cancer therapy. Your dental team will work with you to eliminate periodontal infections and take preventative steps to reduce oral side effects of things like chemotherapy or radiation treatment.

People without cancer but who have active, visible gum infections are encouraged to see their dentist. Regular preventative care every six months and prescribed periodontal therapies can eliminate active gum infections.

Periodontal treatments can work to lower the levels of bacterial DNA known for contributing to cancer within just a few months following gum therapy.
